Insane Catch Robs Padres' Manny Machado of Home Run, Extending Drought

Insane Catch Robs Padres' Manny Machado of Home Run, Extending Drought Author: Maren Angus-Coombs May 01, 2024 San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado thought he had ended his home run drought in the bottom of the first inning Wednesday against the Cincinnati Reds. Since his home run against the Dodgers' James Paxton on April 14, Machado had not hit a home run in 47 consecutive at-bats entering Wednesday's game. The streak extended to 48 in the cruelest way possible. With two runners on base and an 0-1 count, Machado drove a ball to left-center field that appeared to be leaving the yard until Reds center fielder Stuart Fairchild made a leaping robbery. HR robbery of the year?! What a catch

Jake Cronenworth's grand slam lifts the Padres to a 6-2 win against the Reds

Jake Cronenworth hit a tiebreaking grand slam in the seventh inning and Jurickson Profar had four hits for the San Diego Padres, who beat the Cincinnati Reds 6-2 Wednesday to take two of three in the series. Cronenworth hit his third career grand slam and the second for the Padres this season. It came after Tyler Wade opened the inning with a bunt single over the head of reliever Fernando Cruz (1-2), followed by Profar's single and Fernando Tatis Jr.'s walk.

Padres look to ride pitching staff vs. woeful Rockies

Dylan Cease was dominant for the San Diego Padres on Monday night, allowing just one hit and one run in seven innings and striking out eight in a 3-1 win over the Colorado Rockies in Denver. Michael King, who will take the mound Tuesday in Game 2 of the teams' four-game series at Coors Field, might have been even better the last time he started. Although he absorbed a 1-0 loss Wednesday in Milwaukee, King (2-1, 3.33 ERA) took a no-hitter two outs into the seventh before the Brewers' Willy Adames spoiled it with a single to right field. King lasted a career-high 7 2/3 innings, permitting only two hits and a run with two walks and 10 strikeouts.
