RHP James Shields got through seven innings for the first time since April 21 against Minnesota and finished with 10 strikeouts, one shy of his season high. It was his 12th double-digit strikeout game since the start of 2010; only Philadelphia's Cliff Lee has more with 16. "I thought James Shields was really, really good," manager Joe Maddon said. "He deserved a better fate than that."

Shields struck out 10 over 7.1 innings of three-run (two earned) ball Wednesday against the Jays, but received no decision. He allowed seven hits and a walk.
Recommendation: The 10 punchouts were Shields' second-best total of the season. Despite the lack of a win, this was a nice outing for the righty after he surrendered 21 runs (16 earned) in 30.1 innings over his last five starts.
