Jul 23 MLB.com reports Tampa Bay Rays SP James Shields (8-6, 3.69 ERA) received the start Wednesday, July 23, against the Oakland Athletics.

Jul 23 RHP James Shields moved into third place on the Rays' all-time wins list with 27, trailing LHP Scott Kazmir (43) and Victor Zambrano (35).

Jul 23 Shields picked his ninth win of the season on Wednesday by pitching 8.1 innings, giving up three runs on six hits while striking out seven

Recommendation: After giving up back-to-back homers in the second inning, Shields settled down and pitched into the ninth. He came close to completing his fourth game of the season before a Jack Cust double sent him packing. Troy Percival couldn't strand the runner, but he still managed to hang on to the win for Shields. Shields continues to better last season's breakout performance -- he has a terrific 111:24 K:BB ratio.
