Player Notes
According to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal, some teams believe James Shields would go unclaimed on waivers in August.

Advice: The reason being is that Shields still three years and $65 million on his contract. While the veteran right-hander could be traded by Friday's trade deadline, a deal could still happen in August.

Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports that the Padres are pushing hard to deal some of their large contracts before the trade deadline.

Advice: The team is already likely to move impending free agents Justin Upton, Will Venable and Ian Kennedy, but according to league sources they're trying everything they can to move James Shields, Andrew Cashner and Craig Kimbrel as well. Look for A.J. Preller to be a very busy man this week.

ESPN's Jayson Stark was told by rival clubs that the Padres "really want to move" James Shields and Andrew Cashner.

Advice: They're listening on Tyson Ross, as well, but Ross is cheaper and under team control through 2017, so the club is probably more inclined to hang on to him. Ian Kennedy has been mentioned in trade rumors, too, as far as the Padres' rotation goes. Shields, 33, is in the first season of a four-year, $75 million contract and has posted a 3.77 ERA with 144 strikeouts over 126 2/3 innings this season. Cashner holds a 4.10 ERA with 97 whiffs over 109 2/3 frames and is arbitration-eligible for a final time this winter.

James Shields struck out seven over five scoreless innings but didn't factor in the decision Wednesday against the Giants.

Advice: Shields left with a tenuous 1-0 lead that quickly went away, saddling him with a no-decision. He allowed just three hits while walking three in the outing. Missing out on the victory means Shields remains 8-3 with a 3.77 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 144/47 K/BB ratio through 21 starts. An attractive matchup at the Mets on Tuesday is up next.

Wed, Jul 22 Rotoworld
James Shields held the Rockies to one run over five innings in improving to 8-3 on Friday.

Advice: Shields allowed seven hits and walked four, but only Charlie Blackmon's homer did any damage at all. Still, this isn't the kind of outing that's going to help his trade value at all should the Padres seek to move him. The victory was his first since June 3.
