Player Notes
James Shields revealed Monday that he passed a kidney stone during the ALCS.

Advice: Shields began feeling pain on October 12, and it made the Royals' decision to start Jason Vargas instead of Shields on regular rest in Game 4 on October 15 an easy one. He underwent a CT scan to determine the source of his discomfort but by then the team deduced he had already passed the stone. "It was excruciating pain," Shields said. "I wasn’t feeling good." Shields will get the ball in Game 1 of the World Series on Tuesday.

Royals manager announced Saturday that James Shields will get the ball for Game 1 of the World Series against the Giants.

Advice: No surprises here, as Big Game James is the true ace of the Royals staff. Yordano Ventura will follow him in Game 2 with Jason Vargas and Jeremy Guthrie likely to follow in the next two contests.

Andy Martino of the New York Daily News reports that while the Royals will attempt to re-sign impending free agent James Shields, "it is not hopeful."

Advice: Major league sources told Martino that they're expecting a team like the Red Sox to offer Shields a 4-5 year deal, and he says it's "difficult to imagine the Royals matching such an offer." It's no surprise, as Shields would presumably have to take a discount to stay in Kansas City. CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reported earlier this month that Shields should get a deal similar to Anibal Sanchez's five-year, $80 million pact.

Royals manager Ned Yost indicated that James Shields could start Game 4 of the ALCS against the Orioles on Wednesday.

Advice: Shields, who gave up four runs over five innings in Game 1, would be going on normal rest. However, Yost could decide to give him an extra day and hold him back until a potential Game 5 on Thursday. Jason Vargas is the alternative to start Game 4.

James Shields lasted just five innings in Game 1 of the ALCS against the Orioles on Friday, allowing four runs on 10 hits in the process.

Advice: Shields struck out three and walked one on the evening. Once again, he failed to live up to his "Big Game James" moniker, even after being staked to an early 4-0 lead. The O's fought back with a run in the third and three more in the fourth inning, highlighted by a two-out, two-run single by Ryan Flaherty. The Royals will hand the ball to Yordano Ventura for Game 2 on Saturday as the Royals look to take a commanding lead in the best-of-seven series.

Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star reports that the Red Sox are the "early favorites" to sign impending free agent James Shields.

Advice: Yes, Shields is just a few hours away from starting Game 1 of the ALCS, but we're already talking about where he might sign this winter. For what it's worth, Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald has written that "the pitching-needy Sox will undoubtedly try to lure Shields," so it does appear the big right-hander will be at or near the top of the Red Sox' wish list this offseason. CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reported Thursday that the Royals will attempt to re-sign Shields, who he says should get a deal similar to Anibal Sanchez's five-year, $80 million pact.
