Advice: Kansas City is near its payroll limit and will carry six good rotation candidates into camp between Yordano Ventura, Jason Vargas, Jeremy Guthrie, Edinson Volquez, Danny Duffy, and Kris Medlen. Shields has probably begun lowering his asking price here in late January, but he's doubtful to fall into a logical range for the Royals. The 33-year-old has been connected recently to the Marlins, Diamondbacks, Padres, and Blue Jays. He is the best remaining free agent by far.Rotoworld
Advice: It appears that the Marlins' front office wants Shields, but Rosenthal says they need to convince owner Jeffrey Loria it's an investment worth making. Those talks are "ongoing," Rosenthal notes. Shields is said to prefer the West Coast and is shooting for a five-year, $125 million contract, but some executives believe he might have to wind up settling for a four-year deal in the $70-80 million range.

Advice: He'll likely wind up going wherever the money takes him, but Shields lives in San Diego and would, all things being equal, prefer to land in the West. The D'Backs, Giants and Padres have all been connected to the right-hander, but Arizona said Thursday they're no longer interested and San Francisco and San Diego at this point don't seem like likely landing spots. The Tigers, Royals, Blue Jays, Red Sox and Brewers have also been linked to Shields.

Advice: The Marlins have been connected to Shields this winter but reportedly would only go after him full-bore if his price drops enough. The right-hander is seeking a five-year, $125 million contract, though to this point the offers have come in much lower than that. We don't doubt that the Marlins like Shields, but it seems unlikely that they'd win any kind of bidding war if there is one.

Advice: The Diamondbacks were previously linked to Shields, which was an indication that his market wasn't quite what he hoped it would be. Perhaps the offers have improved since. The free agent right-hander reportedly wants a five-year contract worth around $125 million. The Padres, Marlins, Red Sox, Blue Jays, Tigers, and Giants are among the other clubs who have been connected to him this winter.

Advice: Rosenthal adds, however, that it's unclear which teams currently have the heaviest amount of interest. USA Today's Bob Nightengale reported last week that Shields wants a five-year contract worth around $125 million but has been fielding offers more in the four-year, $80 million range. The Diamondbacks, Marlins, Red Sox, Blue Jays, and Tigers are among the other clubs that have been linked to him this winter.

Advice: Shields is the last remaining front-line starter on the open market now that Max Scherzer has settled with the Nationals. USA Today's Bob Nightengale reported this past weekend that Shields is seeking a five-year contract worth close to $125 million but that interested teams are thinking more in the four-year, $80 million range. Maybe the 33-year-old will have better luck as the biggest fish in the pond.

Advice: Interested teams on the other hand, have been negotiating in the four-year, $80 million range. With interest in Max Scherzer intensifying, Shields' market could soon heat up quickly as well.Rotoworld
Advice: Shields' price has begun to drop slowly as spring training nears, making the Jays more interested. Rosenthal said that interest is purely internal at this point, as the club hasn't engaged Shields' agent in negotiations. The Diamondbacks and Tigers are two other teams possibly in on Shields, whose price could be in the four-year, $70-80 million range at this point, Rosenthal notes.
