Player Notes
James Shields pitched well in earning a no-decision against the Marlins on Sunday, yielding two runs on five hits over six innings.

Advice: Shields struck out four and walked two in the contest. Both runs against him scored in the first inning, when he allowed an RBI double to Miguel Rojas and a sacrifice fly to Derek Dietrich. The veteran right-hander boasts a 3.74 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 152/49 K/BB ratio in 139 2/3 innings. Up next on the schedule, a home outing against the Phillies.

James Shields allowed three runs in seven innings, taking a loss on Tuesday versus the Mets.

Advice: Shields allowed a two-run home run to Lucas Duda in the first inning, then got his act together and kept the Mets scoreless the rest of the way. He took the mound to begin the eighth, but allowed a leadoff double to Juan Lagares before being lifted. Shawn Kelly then allowed a two-run home run to Curtis Granderson. Shields yielded seven hits overall, walked none, and struck out four. A candidate to be moved by the July 31 trade deadline, the right-hander has a 3.77 ERA, a 1.30 WHIP, and a 148/47 K/BB ratio over 133 2/3 innings. He'll match up with the Marlins in Miami next.

According to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal, some teams believe James Shields would go unclaimed on waivers in August.

Advice: The reason being is that Shields still three years and $65 million on his contract. While the veteran right-hander could be traded by Friday's trade deadline, a deal could still happen in August.

Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports that the Padres are pushing hard to deal some of their large contracts before the trade deadline.

Advice: The team is already likely to move impending free agents Justin Upton, Will Venable and Ian Kennedy, but according to league sources they're trying everything they can to move James Shields, Andrew Cashner and Craig Kimbrel as well. Look for A.J. Preller to be a very busy man this week.

ESPN's Jayson Stark was told by rival clubs that the Padres "really want to move" James Shields and Andrew Cashner.

Advice: They're listening on Tyson Ross, as well, but Ross is cheaper and under team control through 2017, so the club is probably more inclined to hang on to him. Ian Kennedy has been mentioned in trade rumors, too, as far as the Padres' rotation goes. Shields, 33, is in the first season of a four-year, $75 million contract and has posted a 3.77 ERA with 144 strikeouts over 126 2/3 innings this season. Cashner holds a 4.10 ERA with 97 whiffs over 109 2/3 frames and is arbitration-eligible for a final time this winter.
