Player Notes
James Shields allowed four runs over five innings in the Royals' 9-8 extra-innings victory over the Athletics in Tuesday's Wild Card Game.

Advice: Shields served up a two-run shot to Brandon Moss in the first inning but then held the A's off the scoreboard for the next four frames. However, manager Ned Yost elected to pull him after a single and a walk to start off the sixth, and Yordano Ventura promptly gave up a gopher ball to Moss. The Royals battled back to tie it in the ninth and eventually won it on a walk-off single from Salvador Perez in the 12th. Shields will likely start Game 3 of the ALDS against the Angels on Sunday.

Royals manager Ned Yost officially announced Sunday that James Shields would start for the Royals in Tuesday's Wild Card Game against the Athletics.

Advice: "Big Game James" had been tabbed to work a potential Game 163 had the Royals and Tigers tied for the Central Division crown. Now instead he'll go on Tuesday on regular rest. He has actually been significantly better on the road this season, with a 4-6 record, 3.51 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, and 76/17 K/BB ratio over 102 2/3 innings in 15 starts at Kauffmann Stadium this season. The game will be played in KC.

James Shields yielded three runs over six innings en route to a no-decision as the Royals picked up a win against the White Sox on Thursday.

Advice: Two of the three runs scored on Josh Phegley's two-run home run in the second inning. Overall, Shields relented five hits and a pair of walks while striking out four in his final start of the regular season. He's done well for the Royals in 2014, going 14-8 with a 3.21 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and a 180/44 K/BB ratio. In the likely event the Royals clinch the second Wild Card, Shields will oppose Jon Lester of the Athletics to kick off the American League side of post-season play.
