Barton (stiff neck) took early batting practice on Tuesday and plans on beginning a rehab assignment on Thursday or Friday, the team's web site reports.
Recommendation: Barton is expected to be ready to come off the DL when eligible.

1B Daric Barton, who injured his head and neck when diving into a pool on July 13, took batting practice on Tuesday and will get the staples in his head out on Wednesday. He will then head to Albuquerque to join Triple-A Sacramento for a rehab assignment and is expected to rejoin the A's next week.

Barton smacked his head on the bottom of a pool during the All-Star break, requiring six staples to close the gash and leaving the Oakland first baseman with a neck strain that landed him on the disabled list Saturday.
Advice: The Athletics recalled infielder Wes Bankston from Triple-A Sacramento and started him at first base against the New York Yankees.
