Jerry Crasnick, of ESPN.com, reports the future of Philadelphia Phillies P Brett Myers is uncertain now that CL Brad Lidge has signed an extension with the club. Myers has endured a bumpy season after last year serving effectively as Philadelphia's closer, a role he said he enjoyed. As reported earlier, in Myers' first start with Triple-A Lehigh Valley after his demotion, he allowed three runs in five innings. He primarily used his breaking ball, and, according to a scout, his fastball was in the 88-91 mph range. "He was very hittable," said the scout. "If he's going to turn it around, he's either going to have to show better fastball command or figure out a way to add some velocity." |

Myers gave up three runs on five hits over five innings while striking out six and walking two in his start at Triple-A on Wednesday. Recommendation: Despite a serviceable line in the box score, Myers didn't pitch very well, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports. His split-finger fastball wasn't effective while he relied too heavily on his curveball in critical situations. "I was throwing my split," Myers said. "I couldn't throw that for strikes too much, get guys to swing at it. I threw the curveball for strikeouts. Definitely some improvement. My velocity was better." He's still going to make another start or two at Triple-A before the Phillies even consider bringing him back, so Myers will have another couple of weeks to try and work out the kinks. |

RHP Brett Myers' mixed results from his first Class AAA start drew a reaction from pitching coach Rich Dubee. Myers allowed three runs in the fifth inning and lasted only five innings in a loss for Class AAA Lehigh Valley. He threw 100 pitches, mostly curveballs. The Phillies want Myers to improve the command of his fastball. "It's a building block," Dubee said. "I'd like to see him throw his fastball more, and the people down there are aware of that. But it sounded like he got some confidence going there for a while. He had a little better posture and tempo there on the mound. But again, he still relied on his curveball." |

Myers, leading the major leagues with 24 home runs allowed and coming off the shortest start of his career with the Phillies, is headed back to the minor leagues. Myers agreed to be optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Tuesday, and will start Wednesday night against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Advice: Myers, 3-9 after giving up five runs and getting knocked out without retiring a batter in the third inning in Friday night's 8-7 loss at Texas, has a 5.84 ERA. The Phillies are 1-11 in the last 12 games started by Myers, who is 1-8 in that stretch. |
