Andrew Seligman, of The Associated Press, reports Chicago Cubs SP Ryan Dempster pitched 8 1/3 scoreless innings Thursday, May 15, to pick up his fifth win of the season. He allowed six hits, while striking out 12 batters and walking one batter in the game. |

Dempster struck out a career-high 12 batters Thursday, knocking off the Padres, 4-0. The converted reliever gave up six hits in 8.1 innings and walked just one batter. Recommendation: Dempster improved to 5-1 for the season and lowered his earned run average to 2.35. In 57.1 innings, the Cubs right-hander has allowed only 35 hits (and 24 walks). |

RHP Ryan Dempster turned in the longest outing by a Cubs starting pitcher this year, going 8 1/3 innings in a 4-0 victory over the Padres. It was the first time Dempster had thrown eight or more innings since he pitched a complete game on April 8, 2003 against Houston, when Dempster was with Cincinnati. Dempster is 5-1 with a 2.35 ERA. |

Dempster had another solid outing on the mound Monday, but didn't get much help from his defense. He gave up five runs - all unearned - four hits, one walk and struck out a season-high seven in six innings of a 5-3 loss - his first defeat of the season. Advice: Dempster is still 4-1 with a 2.72 ERA in seven starts, and opponents are batting just .172 - the fifth-lowest mark in the majors. |
