RHP Tim Wakefield had successful surgery to repair a herniated disk in his back, and he said he was assured that he'd be ready to go when spring training begins in February. The 43-year-old knuckleballer made only four starts following the All-Star break when he developed back problems that manifested themselves as weakness in his right leg. Wakefield was enthusiastic about continuing his career and said that getting to 200 career wins (he needs 11) as well as finishing as Boston's all-time franchise leader in wins (he needs 18 to pass the mark shared by Roger Clemens and Cy Young) were things he was hoping to accomplish before he retires.
