Ancona lost 1-0 at the Curi stadium against Perugia on the final day of the season. The result means that the hosts leapfrog Modena and Empoli in the standings to claim 15th position, which earns them the right to play the sixth-placed Serie B team in a two-legged playoff at the end of June, to decide which team plays in Serie A next season. Young defender Daniele Fortunato was sent-off on the stroke of half-time for two yellow cards in only his second ever Serie A appearance, then Englishman Jay Bothroyd scored the all-important goal for Perugia mid-way through the second-half. Coach Giovanni Galeone, who used to be in charge of Perugia, spoke after the encounter. "I've got great memories of working in Perugia, so I'm happy that Perugia are the team that's made the play-off. However, we didn't gift Perugia anything this afternoon, honoring the championship to our very last game." The end of a hugely disappointing season for Ancona, who only won two games, used a total of 46 players and three coaches. |
