Video of flagrant foul no-calls at basketball game goes viral

Connell (Wash.) High's Cole Vanderbilt was a relative unknown in the basketball world, but all that changed two days ago, when a viral YouTube video turned him into one of the most hated players in Washington.

As the Tri-City Herald reported, Vanderbilt turned into public enemy number one when Michael Christenson decided to film a game between Connell and Highland (Wash.) High to prove to parents at Highland that the basketball league needed better officials.

As it turns out, the clip did more than just spotlight an officiating problem; it also made seniors Cole Vanderbilt and teammate Kennan VanHollebeke look like the dirtiest players on the court.

Someone apparently didn't appreciate the fouls -- the fifth foul is definitely of the flagrant variety -- because before anyone could blink, the video had gone viral, with one website proclaiming Vanderbilt to be "the dirtiest basketball player in America."

While Christenson certainly proved his point with the video, what he didn't expect was the outcry on YouTube from commenters who viewed the clip. The negative and sometimes hurtful responses to the fouls forced Vanderbilt's coaches and family to go into damage-control mode.

"[Cole Vanderbilt] a tough kid, but those that know him know he's a teddy bear," Connell coach Oscar Garza told the Tri-City Herald. "My 7-year-old son loves him and lights up when he's around. But on (YouTube) he's the world's meanest, ugliest kid. It's not fair, but I just want him to know his teammates and coaches are behind him."

Even though you could probably make a case that most of the fouls, while aggressive in nature, weren't of the flagrant variety, there's no doubting the fifth foul is definitely the kind of bushleague garbage that should get you kicked out of a game.

It's clear from the way Vanderbilt goes after the Highland player that he had no intention of going for the ball; he was merely trying to make sure the player never had a chance to make it to the hoop.

Looks like the plump daddies from the hometeam can't play ball so they throw around their weight - literally. The truly sad thing about their behavior is the parents of these attackers did nothing - guess you know where the kids learned it. The Connell team stinks and their sportsmanship is non-existent. Their basketball team would make a better football team!

I hope Mr. Garza's 7 year old doesn't learn to play from his friend or his dad. I think the smiles on that players' face speaks volumes.

I don't know what some of you are seeing but that kid, "teddy bear" or not, is a thug on the court and should be off of the team. If you watch the kid's face and movements after each foul, you can see his actions are deliberate and meant to intimidate and/or cause harm. Is that what coaches are teaching kids to do when they aren't good at the sport but are big enough to intimidate? Allowing kids to participate violently and flagrantly in sports then getting "support" from the adults that are supposed to be teaching them sportsmanship is why we are seeing more and more injuries, serious injuries, and deaths, especially in football.

Craig, it's morons like you that condone such actions and result in serious injury and DEATH!! IT'S A FRICKING GAME!!!!! NOT the end all of your life!!

the refs should of warned the players after the 1st foul he got no ball and all body just swinging around. The push should of been a technical after the warning that they should of had, player had no shot for the ball, it is a flagrant foul, foul number 5 should of been a technical, and a ejection. some of the fouls happen and you cant stop them but i would like to see the whole game to see what really happened throughout.

This is just as much the ref's and coach's fault. The ref for not getting control of the game, and the coach for not teaching fundamentals.

The first 2 fouls are nothing more than fouls. The first committed by #34, second by #42.

Foul #3 is a hard foul, BUT the ball handler did stop short in the middle of his "move". Had the coach taught good fundamentals, #34 could have held his ground and drawn a charge.

Foul #4, flagrant foul, should have been a technical. Was #42.

Foul #5, and absolute flagrant foul. No holding, no lack of athleticism, just a clothes-line by a kid who needs to be benched.

Foul #6 is just a typical over the back foul. But the ref missed a call that he could have made at the foul line when #34 hacked the ball handler.

I agree, but the BIGGEST problem in this game were the Ref's... My guess is none of them can even spell Officiate!!!!!!!
      • David 4 months ago
Speaking as a former player and current ref, please anyone who has made a comment about an official on here then please pay your money, take your tests, drive to countless games, work your way through the system, and then talk. Until then please do not comment anymore. Also, if you are a coach bashing this kid then also please stop commenting.
With that being said, there are two fouls here that are out of line. #3 and #5. The rest are fouls that happen often in many games. #3 should have been an intentional (not flagrant) and #5 should have been a flagrant tech resulting in him getting tossed. The rest were fouls. Period.
Was the kid a bruiser, yes. Was the kid out of line, maybe. Should the kid be ripped to pieces for rough play, no. We talk about the bad state of basketball and rough play...how about somene post a video of the great Kevin McHale fouling Kurt Rambis or the entire season for the late 80s Pistons. Basketball is, was, and always will be a rough sport. Deal with it or take up swimming.

It takes eyeballs and knowledge of the game to officiate. Out of line? Yes, on ALL of the fouls, he's a talent-less turd and you appear to be an apologist for turd-style gameplay NOT caught by "officials".

I'm almost at a loss for words. The fouls that were shown on this clip were ALL flagrant fouls. Where was the perpetrator's coach in all this?? Is that the kind of basketball he teaches? And, the one ref was SMILING at the kid who almost flipped the other kid on his head. Vanderbilt should be kicked off the team and prosecuted for assault. There is NO ROOM in high school sports for that kind of nonsense.

Who teaches these kids to play like this ? Both coaches are at fault, the first for teaching his kids to act like animals, the second for not walking off and away from the court. If you want to wrestle, joint the wrestling team. Pathetic, our children deserve better. Both Coaches show no leadership skills here, and I hate to point out the obviouse but where are the parents ? I would have dragged my kid off that court if I saw him perform with such lack of respect for the game and fellow players.

Fire the refs and bench fat boy!
    • Michael Says  •  Venice, Florida  •  4 months ago
That guy should be benched for the season. Clothes lining a player on the court is totally unacceptable not to mention pile driving another. That was not just a flagrant foul but borderline criminal assault. I can't believe he wasn't ejected for any of those fouls.

Call to complain - Tim Peterson. Principal at Connell High. (509) 234-2911

Those two kids MUST be thrown off that team, and the coach fired immediately.

Everyone call tomorrow and make this school set a good example!

Number 34 should have some professional therapy before he becomes the serial killer he seems destined to be. No care or regard for how he fouls the other players.

Connell does not have a basketball team ... nope, it is a group of pretenders. VERY obvious as to who was more talented and skilled. I had to play against a few thugs like that in my day and they eventually got theirs. I blaim the "coach" more than anybody. These kids have issues and their coach is condoning it
    • teton  •  Tupelo, Mississippi  •  4 months ago
the coach is responsible for the actions of this player. he should be fired. the player
should be removed from the team permanently.

    • daniel  •  4 months ago
#4 and #5 are definitely flagrant. The others are just hard fouls cause by like of talent by number 34. He sucks, is fat, and can't jump. The refs should have warned the other team and number 34.
