Sabrina Ionescu, the Liberty’s overall No. in the WNBA Draft, went down with a sprained ankle in New York’s third game but one of her six rookie teammates picked up the slack and on the weekend was rewarded for her efforts. Jazmine Jones has been selected to the 2020 WNBA All-Rookie Team, becoming the first Liberty rookie to earn the honor since teammate Kiah Stokes in 2015.
She was the No. overall pick in the draft in April and one of the most celebrated rookies in league history — only to sustain a season-ending injury in the second quarter of her third pro game. Ionescu rolled her ankle when she stepped on the foot of the Atlanta Dream’s backpedaling Betnijah Laney.
In an interview with the New York Times' Marc Stein, New York Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu addressed her season-ending ankle injury and the continued impact of Kobe Bryant's death. In her second game as a pro, Ionescu finished with 33 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. As it looked like she was about to exceed the lofty expectations thrust upon her, the former Oregon star exited a July 31 game against the Atlanta Dream.
