Teen in critical condition after shooting; Southeast High School goes on 'soft lockdown'

A 17-year-old male was shot outside a residence in the 1800 block of Holly Drive Wednesday afternoon, prompting nearby Southeast High School to go on a "soft lockdown."

The victim had multiple gunshot wounds to the abdomen and lower body, said Springfield Police Deputy Chief Joshua Stuenkel.

The victim was in stable condition late Wednesday afternoon, Stuenkel said.

He was transported to HSHS St. John's Hospital via ambulance, Stuenkel added.

The alert to Springfield police came via ShotSpotter at 12:19 p.m.

Holly Drive runs between Pope Avenue and Greentree Road.

Because of the shooting, Southeast went on a "soft lockdown," meaning no one was allowed in or out of the high school, said District 186 spokeswoman Bree Hankins.

The lockdown went into effect at 12:20 p.m. and lasted approximately 30 minutes, Hankins said.

"We took immediate action to ensure the safety of students and staff in the building," Hankins said, via a text. "We share the concern of our families and community and condemn the actions of those who jeopardize the safety of our city."
