Suspected Driver in Barcelona Attack Killed by Police

The suspected driver of the van that plowed through a crowd in Barcelona on Thursday, killing 13 people, has been fatally shot by police.

Catalan police annouced the news on Monday, tweeting “We confirm that the man shot down in #subirats is Younes Abouyaaqoub, author of the terrorist attack in #barcelona.”

Younes Abouyaaqoub, 22, was the last of a dozen suspects still on the run following the attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils. Police, who killed Abouyaaqoub during an operation in Subirats — a village about 20 miles west of Barcelona — also said he was wearing what appeared to be an explosive belt.

Abouyaaqoub drove the white van that jumped the sidewalk and crashed into a crowd in the Las Ramblas district — a popular Barcelona tourist destination — last week, killing 13 and injuring more than 100 others.

During an earlier news conference on Monday, authorities said he escaped the scene on foot, carjacked a vehicle, and stabbed the driver, before mowing down a police officer at a highway checkpoint near Barcelona.

Hours later, he’s believed to have helped carry out a linked attack in Cambrils, a seaside town south of Barcelona. A woman died of her injuries after the second deadly vehicle crash, making her the 15th victim of the attacks in the two Spanish cities.

On Saturday, Spanish Interior Minister Juan Ignacio Zoida said the terrorist cell thought to be responsible for the attacks had been “completely dismantled.”
