Stevie Wonder Takes Knee in Solidarity with Colin Kaepernick
Stevie Wonder performed at the 2017 Global Citizen Festival tonight. Ahead of his set, he took a knee in solidarity with former San Francisco 49er Colin Kaepernick. “Tonight, I’m taking a knee for America,” Wonder said, before dropping to first one knee and then another. On both knees, he offered a prayer for “our planet, our future, our leaders of the world, and our globe.” Watch below via MSNBC. The move followed remarks Donald Trump recently made during a rally in Huntsville, Alabama. “Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners when somebody disrespects our flag to say, ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field right now. He’s fired. He’s fired!’” he said to the crowd.
During the 2016-2017 football season, Kaepernick took a knee to protest the national anthem. He opted out of his contract with the 49ers after the season ended, and has yet to be signed to another team. JAY-Z recently dedicated his 4:44 track “The Story of O.J.” to Kaepernick during his Meadows Festival performance.
