New rifle team takes aim at stigma

Mar. 14—CHAPLIN — Parish Hill Middle/High School has set its sights on a new sport.

The school established a rifle team this fall.

Originally, the coach, English teacher Prentice Tracy, was approached by the administration about starting a team a couple of years ago, but then the concept was paused as the coronavirus pandemic took hold.

"There's not too many in this neck of the woods," Tracy said. "It's not a very traditional program." He acknowledged there is a " stigma" associated with the thought of combining weapons and schools.

But Tracy emphasized there is a massive difference between a student athlete
