Patriots suspend DE Bennett for 1 week after 'disagreement'

The New England Patriots have suspended defensive end Michael Bennett for one week for conduct detrimental to the team, multiple media outlets reported Tuesday.

In a statement, Bennett told ESPN's Jordan Schultz, "On Friday, I had a philosophical disagreement with my position coach that has led to my suspension. I apologize to my teammates for any distraction this may have caused."

The Patriots defensive line coach is Bret Bielema.

Bennett, who will miss Monday night's game against the New York Jets, was not at practice Tuesday, NFL Network reported.

The 11th-year veteran has started one game for the Patriots this season, totaling 2.5 sacks and five tackles.

Bennett, 33, joined the Patriots via trade from the Philadelphia Eagles in March. He skipped voluntary offseason workouts, instead staying at his home in Hawaii, but took part in mandatory minicamp in June.

Bennett had nine sacks and 30 QB hits last season, with the latter equaling a career high. He has 65.5 sacks and 182 QB hits in his NFL career.
