With the final round of the 2017 Open Championship fast approaching, how much will this year's winner stand to pocket?

Earlier this month the R&A announced that the total prize pool on offer would be $10,250,000 - a 10% increase in last year's sum.

Whoever ends up lifting the iconic Claret Jug come Sunday evening will receive a staggering $1,845,000 - with the runner up getting just over $1m.

Last year's winner, Henrik Stenson, took home £1,175,000 - which roughly equates to $1,525,000 at today's exchange rate.

The R&A have also taken the step of awarding this year's money in US dollars.

“We are operating in an increasingly global marketplace and have made the decision to award the prize fund in U.S. dollars in recognition of the fact that it is the most widely adopted currency for prize money in golf,” R&A chief executive Martin Slumbers.

The Open prize money

The Open is the second-richest golf tournament in the world at the moment behind only the U.S. Open, which had a $12 million purse this year.

If more than 70 professional golfers qualify for the final two rounds, additional prize money will be added. Prize money will decrease by $125 per qualifying place above 70 to a minimum of $13,500.
