Olathe North, BV girls + St. James, De Soto boys advance to state hoops semifinals
Olathe North’s girls basketball team continued its unbeaten run through the 2021-22 season with 54-51 win over Blue Valley North on Wednesday at the Kansas Class 6A state high school tournament in Wichita.
In the quarterfinals at Wichita State’s Koch Arena, the top-seeded Eagles got 15 points from Missouri State pledge Sania Copeland to hold off a spirited showing by eighth-seeded Blue Valley.
Olathe North (23-0) is next scheduled to play in the semifinals on Friday at 6 p.m. against No. 4 seed Washburn Rural, which beat No. 5 Dodge City 66-43 Wednesday night.
Sixth seeded Blue Valley also won and advanced out of Wednesday’s quarterfinals, improving to 20-3 with a 33-32 victory over third-seeded Topeka.
Blue Valley is slated to face second-seeded Derby (22-1), a 41-17 winner over Shawnee Mission West on Wednesday, in the semifinals on Friday at 2 p.m.
The boys 6A quarterfinals are scheduled for Thursday at Koch Arena.
Class 5A boys
Upsets were the order of the day as the boys Class 5A state tournament got underway at White Auditorium in Emporia.
No. 7 seed St. James beat second-seeded Topeka West 59-51, and eighth-seeded Topeka Seaman stunned Kapaun Mt. Carmel (21-2), the tournament’s No. 1 seed, 54-43.
Having snapped a 20-game win streak by West, St. James (16-7) now plays No. 3 seed De Soto, which beat No. 6 seed Blue Valley West 50-45 Wednesday night, in Friday’s semifinals at 6 p.m.
Friday’s other semifinal pits Topeka Seaman against defending champion and No. 4 seed Maize, a 53-47 winner over fifth-seeded Topeka Highland Park, at 2 p.m.
