Ohio high school football: Who won in Week 3? Scores, quick hits from Columbus-area games

Several teams experiencing early season success were part of our high school football coverage in Week 3.

Gahanna Lincoln, the defending Division I, Region 3 champion, played the first game in its new stadium, taking on Olentangy Liberty.

In a battle of 2-0 teams, Dublin Jerome and Hilliard Davidson met for the first time.

We also covered Olentangy and its pursuit of a 3-0 start behind Penn State-bound quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer.

Friday quick hits

Olentangy 31, Westerville South 14

  • It was another solid night for the Braves’ offense, one that included three passing touchdowns for star quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer, and another big-play effort from the defense. Olentangy (3-0) sacked South quarterback Dominic Birtha three times, two of them coming from 6-foot-3, 250-pound sophomore lineman Daniel Stephens, and intercepted him twice. Will Beinecke had the other sack and an interception, and Lucas Jackson’s pick just before halftime set up a last-second scoring pass from Grunkemeyer to tight end Gavin Grover. Olentangy’s defense had three takeaways in a win last week at Medina. “We have some athletes and people might sleep on us because we went (4-7) last year, but we’ve invested a lot into our team and it’s all come together,” said Beinecke, a junior linebacker. “We have athletes on defense who haven’t gotten much love yet, but they’re working hard.”

  • Grunkemeyer finished 16 of 25 for 212 yards, with touchdown passes to Grover, Jackson Wiley and Sam Uhlenhake. A 69-yard scoring pass to Wiley with 3:23 left in the first half gave visiting Olentangy some breathing room at 14-0. After the game, Wiley admitted the play did not go as planned — even if it ended up that way. “I actually ran the play wrong,” said Wiley, who caught the ball in stride at midfield and raced the rest of the way. “I ran too many steps out to break in for the slant, but I scored, so it’s whatever. It showed us the middle of the field was pretty open. We had other plays ready to take advantage of that, but we didn’t have to use them.” Wiley is the son of former Ohio State running back Michael Wiley.

  • That Grover, a Cincinnati commit, knew where to be in the final seconds of the first half was no accident. Jackson’s interception with 21 seconds left set up Olentangy at the South 30. Grunkemeyer scrambled 13 yards on second down and, as time expired, hit Grover in the front left corner of the end zone. “From what I know, those two have been throwing to each other since they were 6 years old,” coach Wade Bartholomew said. “Gavin is a big target (at 6-6, 240 pounds). He knows where to be and he knows how to get there. Ethan can throw the ball in about 100 different places and Gavin can get it.”

  • South, which is 1-2 for the first time since 2017, got two scores in the final four minutes to make the score respectable. Nasir Phillips had a 3-yard touchdown run and Ian Gordon scored from 34 yards. Phillips rushed for 99 yards on 16 carries. The Wildcats might have a chance to rebound the next two weeks as OCC-Capital play begins against Dublin Scioto (0-3) and Big Walnut (1-2), but then a rivalry game looms Sept. 22 with Westerville North, which is 3-0 in its first season under former Ohio State quarterback Stanley Jackson Sr.

Hilliard Davidson 17, Dublin Jerome 13

  • In the programs’ first meeting, visiting Davidson held on to improve to 3-0. Led by junior running back Keevin Gibbon, the Wildcats dominated time of possession in the first half, but led just 14-7 at the break. Gibbon finished with 159 of Davidson's 254 yards rushing on 30 of the team's 54 carries. He battled leg cramps in the second half. “It’s our seniors’ last year,” he said. “I have to fight through whatever I’m going through. It might be somebody’s last game. I have to give it my all.”

  • While Davidson’s ground attack again controlled the clock, it was the passing game that accounted for both touchdowns. Junior tight end Drew Reminger, who saw limited time last season on junior varsity, caught touchdown passes of 4 and 11 yards and added a key 25-yard reception late in the fourth quarter to help extend a drive. Johnny DiBlasio completed 5 of 8 passes for 39 yards and the two scores. “At the end of the day, you just have to execute and believe in yourself and believe in the work that you put in and everything will turn out OK,” Reminger said. “We run the ball very well and that opens up the passing game.”

  • The Wildcats had four fourth-down conversions, including one late in the game in their territory to help preserve the win. Gibbon picked up 1 yard on fourth-and-1 to keep the drive alive, with Reminger making his 25-yard reception on the next play. “It all comes down to trust,” Davidson coach Jeremey Scally said. “Do our kids trust us? Do we trust our kids? When you’re on the sidelines, you look them in the eyes and you find out really quickly. We spend so much time with our kids. I can tell in that moment when it’s fourth-and-1 what the kids want to do and what they’re confident in doing.”

  • Despite the win, DiBlasio said his team has plenty of room for improvement as it prepares to take on Hilliard Darby next Friday. “We’ll watch film tomorrow and get ready for Darby and the rest of the season,” he said.

  • Kyle White’s 13-yard touchdown pass to Carson Bleeks pulled Jerome (2-1) to within 14-7. White’s 45-yard touchdown pass to Zach Thomas closed the Celtics to within 17-13 in the fourth quarter. White completed 10 of 20 passes for 146 yards. “We ran about 10 plays in the first half and we couldn’t get off the field on defense,” Jerome coach Brett Glass said. “It was a miracle we were in the game. We had chances in the second half. We just needed to make more plays. We have to coach better. We’re proud of the kids’ effort. We played really hard.”

Kaseem Wade had four touchdown runs in Canal Winchester's 42-14 win at Lancaster on Friday.

Canal Winchester 42, Lancaster 14

  • Lancaster trailed 14-7 at halftime but seemed to gain some momentum when senior running back Xavier Goss ripped off a 59-yard touchdown run on the fourth play of the third quarter to tie the game. But the visiting Indians responded by scoring 28 unanswered points, with two of those scores coming directly off turnovers, including a 63-yard fumble return for a touchdown with 1 second remaining. “When you have turnovers, it’s never going to be good, and we struggled to stop the run early on,” Lancaster coach Bryan Schoonover said. “We turn the ball over in crucial spots, and we are a team trying to find a way to win. Winning is tough, and it’s not something that’s given to you. You have to earn it. You just can’t turn it over as much as we are and expect to win. We have to fix it.” Lancaster (1-2) has turned the ball over nine times this season.

  • Lancaster’s defense came up with a goal-line stand on the Indians’ first possession by stopping them on third and fourth down from the 1-yard line. However, from that point on, Canal Winchester (3-0) was in control. The Indians finished with 434 total yards, including 403 on the ground. Kaseem Wade had 169 yards on 11 carries and scored on runs of 19, 6, 70 and 41 yards. Corey Howard finished with 158 yards on 12 carries with a score, and quarterback Maxton Bruner added 76 yards rushing.

Gahanna Lincoln coach Bruce Ward talks to his players after the Lions' win against Olentangy Liberty on Friday night.

Gahanna Lincoln 46, Olentangy Liberty 28

  • Gahanna celebrated the opening of its new stadium by rallying past Liberty. The Lions trailed 28-13 in the third quarter before outscoring the Patriots 33-0 the rest of the way. Gahanna (3-0) has been atop The Dispatch’s Super 7 poll since the preseason. Liberty dropped to 0-3 under first-year coach John Sansbury.

  • Diore Hubbard rushed for 207 yards and one touchdown on 23 carries to lead the Lions. Brennen Ward completed 12 of 19 passes for 191 yards and three touchdowns, and Jalen Scott had five catches for 75 yards and two scores. Cameron Frazier had a 65-yard touchdown reception and added a 59-yard fumble recovery for a score and two interceptions.

  • Andrew Leonard threw four touchdown passes for Liberty, with two going to Evan Nelson.

Tavien St. Clair, an Ohio State commit in the class of 2025, helped Bellefontaine defeat host Licking Heights 45-14 on Friday.

Bellefontaine 45, Licking Heights 14

  • Licking Heights probably entered its game against visiting Bellefontaine figuring to key on junior quarterback and Ohio State commit Tavien St. Clair. But it was Bellefontaine running back Chris Fogan who stole the show. The senior carried 21 times for 209 yards and three touchdowns. “Early on for us, it was a long ride on the bus and I don’t think we were locked in,” said Bellefontaine coach Jason Brown, whose team traveled 75 miles from Logan County. “Once we got locked in and played to our standard, we started to make plays, get some stops and score some points.”

  • For Licking Heights, Jake Lopinto had six carries for 42 yards and a touchdown and caught three passes for 88 yards and a score. Jackson Brewer caught five passes for 55 yards, and Josiah Ayers had two receptions for 51 yards. “They are obviously a very talented team,” Hornets coach Austin Drewyor said of Bellefontaine. “We wanted to come out and be as aggressive as we could. It paid off early for us with (a 7-0) lead, but I think we were out of position a few times. I don’t question the effort. We just didn’t execute all of the time.”
