A law enforcement officer was hospitalized Wednesday night after being shot in the Camp Verde area, the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office said.

Sheriff's deputies received a call from officers about 7:45 p.m. asking for assistance near Cherry Creek and State Route 260, the Sheriff's Office said in a statement. The officer was shot after "an altercation with a suspect," the statement read.

The Sheriff's Office said the officer was flown out of the area into Deer Valley for "emergency medical attention." Further details on the officer's condition and identity were not released.

It was not immediately clear what law enforcement agency the officer works for, but the Sheriff's Office confirmed he is not with that agency.

The suspect fled the scene on foot and several law enforcement agencies were assisting in tracking down the shooter Wednesday night, the Sheriff's Office said.

The public was asked to avoid the area.
