Flyers 2023-24 Player Grades: Sam Ersson - The Hockey Writers Philadelphia Flyers Latest News, Analysis & More

In this edition of our 2023-24 Philadelphia Flyers player grades, we take a look at 24-year-old goaltender Sam Ersson. Ersson was originally meant to be the Flyers' backup, but he took over the reins due to both his great play and the fact that he was kind of forced to. It cannot be understated how difficult of a position that is for a player, but he was up for the challenge and kept the Flyers competitive until the season's end, missing the postseason by four points despite losing nine of their last 11 contests. Overall, he had a .890 save percentage (SV%), a 2.82 goals-against average (GAA), and a minus-4.8 goals saved above expected (GSAx).

Flyers keep slim playoff hopes alive with 1-0 victory over New Jersey

Forget flipping games on TV, scrolling social media, reading the ticker or most traditional means of scoreboard watching in the NHL. The Philadelphia Flyers are ready to tune out the noise — and can only hope when they tune back in, Game 82 will mean something to their playoff fortunes. “We're not going to look at the scoreboard,” coach John Tortorella said. Travis Konecny scored a short-handed breakaway goal and Samuel Ersson stopped 20 shots to keep the resolute Flyers' miniscule postseason hopes alive with one game left to play in a 1-0 win over the New Jersey Devils on Saturday night.

  • Werenski has 3 points, Blue Jackets hand Flyers 7th straight loss

Damon Severson scored twice, and Johnny Gaudreau had two assists for the Blue Jackets (26-39-12), who have won three of four. Olle Lycksell and Adam Ginning each scored his first NHL goal, and Samuel Ersson made 28 saves for the Flyers (36-31-11), who are 0-5-2 in their past seven. Philadelphia has 83 points, tied with the Pittsburgh Penguins for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Eastern Conference having played one more game.
