Starting Monday, NHL Award finalists will start to be announced ahead of the June ceremony. While some awards will be a close race though, this year, the Vezina Trophy is unlikely to be one of them. The clear Vezina Trophy favorite is Winnipeg Jets starter Connor Hellebuyck. Hellebuyck was one of the keys to the Jets' successful year, playing 60 games this season.
With the Canucks and Predators tied at one victory apiece in their Western Conference first-round playoff series, the biggest issue is the absence of Vancouver's No. 1 goaltender Thatcher Demko going into Game 3 on Friday night in Nashville. Demko sustained a lower-body injury in backstopping the Canucks to a 4-2 win in the opener on Sunday. The team announced on Monday that he would miss Game 2 on Tuesday and might be out for the remainder of the series.
Earlier in the day, Vancouver head coach Rick Tocchet announced that goalie Thatcher Demko would not play due to injury. Tocchet would not elaborate on the injury, only saying, “It might have been in the game, but I'm not quite sure because he skated yesterday.” Demko played all of Game 1 for the Cunucks on Sunday. The Preds struck first when Anthony Beauvillier tipped the pass in from Filip Forsberg just 1:14 into the 1st period to take the early lead, 1-0.
