Anze Kopitar fired a wrist shot past Stuart Skinner’s glove and into the top corner on a breakaway to give the Los Angeles Kings a 5-4 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday night in Game 2 of the first-round playoff series. Playing in his 94th postseason game to tie Luc Robitaille's franchise record, Kopitar picked up the puck near the Edmonton blue line, moved in and shot from the slot as Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse dove to try to block the shot. “Honestly, it was kind of a wacky play where Mikey (Anderson) throws it up the boards, and I think it was Q (Quentin Byfield) who tipped it, or was trying to tip it just to prevent the icing," Kopitar said.
Matias Maccelli scored 1:35 into overtime and the Arizona Coyotes beat the Edmonton Oilers 3-2 on Friday night after being informed of the team's expected move to Utah. Josh Doan had a goal and an assist, and Logan Cooley also scored to help the Coyotes get their fourth win in five games. Karel Vejmelka stopped 37 shots.
There has been much debate regarding the play of Darnell Nurse and Cody Ceci this season. The Edmonton Oilers have had relatively consistent success with their other two defensive pairs, but Nurse and Ceci have been boom or bust over various stretches. This duo is back for another playoff run, and if the Oilers want to win the Stanley Cup, they will need both players to be at their best. Since 2021-22, the Oilers have a 5-on-5 goal share (GF%) of 51.36 when they are on the ice together.
