It's not official yet, but it seems certain that the St. Louis Blues are set to miss the playoffs for the second season in a row, which will. For general manager Doug Armstrong, that means that the long-simmering discussion of a rebuild has to move to the front burner on high heat. The Blues cannot afford to wallow in mediocrity for many seasons. Since captain Alex Pietrangelo departed for the Vegas Golden Knights in free agency, the blueline has been — and it's only gotten worse.
The Blues were without a pair of key players for Sunday's game in Anaheim. Forward Jake Neighbours and defenseman Justin Faulk missed the contest because of upper-body injuries suffered on Saturday in San Jose. “Nothing's changed since yesterday,” Blues interim coach Drew Bannister said Sunday. With Neighbours and Faulk out, forward Kevin Hayes and defenseman Torey Krug were reinserted into the lineup against the Ducks.
Jordan Kyrou scored in the shootout and the St. Louis Blues beat the Anaheim Ducks 6-5 on Sunday to preserve their slim playoff hopes. Robert Thomas had a goal and three assists, and Zack Bolduc, Matthew Kessel, Pavel Buchnevich and Brayden Schenn also scored to help the Blues bounce back from a disastrous 3-2 overtime loss to San Jose on Saturday. Jordan Binnington finished with 33 saves through overtime and Kyrou had three assists.
