  • Jacob Markstrom could be back in the Flames crease this weekend

The Calgary Flames might be getting a boost in between the pipes this weekend. After missing the last four games with a lower-body injury, goaltender Jacob Markstrom is expected to be ready to go in time for this weekend, potentially against the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday night. Flames head coach Ryan Huska confirmed this with the media this morning. The 34-year-old has been one of the best goaltenders in the NHL this season, owning a .910 save percentage and ranking fourth best in the league for goals saved above expected with 16.1, according to Money Puck.

3 Flames With Term Who Could Be Moved This Offseason

If it wasn't already clear, the Calgary Flames' moves in recent months prove that they are very much in a retooling state. The first to go was Nikita Zadorov, followed by Elias Lindholm, then Chris Tanev, and most recently Noah Hanifin. General manager Craig Conroy was able to pick up some solid assets for those players to start putting together a solid foundation of young talent and picks. The Flames were reported to have been in serious talks with moving Jacob Markstrom to the New Jersey Devils prior to the trade deadline, but the deal fell through.

The Goalie Report: Risers & Fallers

At the end of the day, both Jacob Markstrom and Juuse Saros stayed put. Despite significant interest in Markstrom from the Devils and a deal that fell through at the last minute, the Flames opted to keep Markstrom for the remainder of the season even though they remain a longshot to make the playoffs. The Predators' recent winning streak also meant there was no hurry to deal Saros and promote top prospect Yaroslav Askarov, who will have to wait just a little longer to make his mark in the NHL. A number of other teams could've used some goaltending help, but it was only the Devils who made significant moves in net, acquiring veteran netminder Jake Allen from the Canadiens and swapped Vitek Vanecek for Kaapo Kahkonen with the Sharks.
