Auston Matthews scored his 66th goal and inched closer to becoming the ninth player in NHL history to tally 70 in a season in leading the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 5-2 victory over New Jersey on Tuesday night, ending the disappointing Devils’ playoff hopes.
Brendan Smith had a goal and two assists and the Devils snapped a three-game losing streak by holding on for a 4-3 win over the Ottawa Senators on Saturday night.
Just ask Montreal Canadiens forward Josh Anderson, who won it for December, but has otherwise been mired in a season-long slump. It's a testament to Primeau's impressive play that he won the award as a backup with limited ice time, but also far from indicative he can keep up the pace, based on the small sample size.
