Powers-Johnson's Versatility Gives Raiders an Early Contributor

When the Las Vegas Raiders selected Oregon's Jackson Powers-Johnson in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft, he was announced as a guard. This raised some eyebrows, as Powers-Johnson spent his junior season with the Ducks at center, winning the Rimington Trophy, given to college football's best center. It appears Powers-Johnson will transition to guard in the NFL. This shouldn't concern Raiders fans, as he did play left and right guard during his time at Oregon.

The phone rang, and Jackson Powers-Johnson was in trouble. “He was in the second grade, and I got a call from the principal,” his mother, Jennifer, said in a phone interview. “She had Jackson in her office and she said that Jackson doesn't let any of the other kids win at sports at recess.” Jennifer was at a loss.

The details of the game itself are a tad fuzzy in Jackson Powers-Johnson's mind some 16 years later. Johnnie Lee Higgins punctuated his 53-yard punt return for a touchdown with a cartwheel and backflip ... Michael Bush rumbled into the end zone from 5 yards out for another score before Andrew Walter hit Chaz Schillens for a 2-point conversion ... JaMarcus Russell completed 2-of 5 passes for 13 yards while Stanford Routt and Hiram Eugene picked off J.T. O'Sullivan and Shaun Hill, respectively. Powers-Johnson was 5 years old and entering kindergarten on Aug. 8, 2008, so it's no wonder the Las Vegas Raiders' second-round draft pick can't recall specifics of the Silver and Black's 18-6 preseason win over the San Francisco 49ers at the Oakland Coliseum that night.
