Macron arrives in New Caledonia for high-stakes talks

STORY: France will maintain its additional security forces sent to quell turmoil in New Caledonia. That was the word as French President Emmanuel Macron arrived on the French-ruled Pacific island Thursday, for talks with local leaders meant to turn the page on deadly riots sparked by a contested electoral reform. He greeted officials at the airport and called for a return to normality."My wish, along with the ministers and the entire government is to stand with the people, so that we can return to peace, to calm and safety as quickly as possible. This is the top priority."In a meeting with political and business leaders, Macron held a moment of silence for people who lost their lives in the recent unrest.Six people have died so far in protests, triggered by anger at electoral reforms passed by lawmakers in mainland France to let more French nationals vote in New Caledonia's elections, a move the local Kanak people fear will dilute their votes and make it harder for any future referendum on independence to pass.Macron has said the island's state of emergency won't be lifted, until protesters remove their blockades. He said additional security of around 3,000 officers would remain, even during the Paris Olympics if required. The largest pro-independence bloc on the island wants Macron to shelve the electoral reform.Thousands of tourists have been stranded by the unrest, with France, Australia and New Zealand organizing flights to extract hundreds of people.
