'A true icon': Legendary Duke sports broadcaster, Stanly County native dies at 81

DURHAM, N.C. (WBTV) - Legendary Duke University radio play-by-play man Bob Harris died Wednesday, the school said . The 81-year-old served on the Blue Devils' football and men's basketball broadcast team for 41 years before his retirement in 2017. During that time, he was a three-time recipient of the North Carolina Broadcaster of the Year award. He called 13 Final Four events and five national championships for Duke, and nearly 1,400 total games. He called every Blue Devils football game from 1976-2016, being behind the mic for 471 consecutive contests.
