Five has been the magic number for the Toronto Blue Jays as they head into the second contest of their four-game series against the host Kansas City Royals on Tuesday evening. The Blue Jays have won nine of their last 13 games while scoring exactly five runs in eight of the victories. Daulton Varsho's team-leading sixth homer on Monday, a two-run shot, gave Toronto a five-run lead. The Blue Jays held on for a 5-3 win over the Royals.
Joe Musgrove pitched seven innings for the first time since July 4 and Xander Bogaerts homered for the San Diego Padres, who beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-3 on Sunday to avoid a three-game sweep. Musgrove improved to 4-0 against the Blue Jays, who picked him in the first round of the 2011 draft. The big right-hander from suburban El Cajon allowed solo homers to Davis Schneider and Ernie Clement but otherwise pitched well enough to improve to 3-2.
Varsho continued his hot streak by belting a Randy Vasquez fastball down the right-field line for a no-doubt three-run home run with two out in the first inning, giving Berríos a 3-0 lead before he threw a single pitch. Berríos popped him up on the first pitch to escape the jam.
