Joe Pitts re-elected as Clarksville mayor

Clarksville voters returned Joe Pitts to the city's highest office for a second, four-year term, on Tuesday.

The vote in the three-way race for Clarksville mayor was Pitts receiving 14,095 votes, or almost 55% of the vote, to 8,715 votes (34%) for former city councilperson David Allen, and 2,846 votes (11%) for local political newcomer A.C. "Big Sarge" Lopez.

Pitts ran on a slogan of "Clarksville first," and it clearly resonated across the city.

"I'm grateful to the Lord for His favor, and to the people of my hometown who gave me their vote," an elated Pitts said late Tuesday.

"It's the people who make Clarksville special," Pitts said, noting they come from all walks of life.

Pitts made roads and transportation a key priority in his first, four-year term, among other front-and-center items in a rapidly-growing city. The population of Clarksville has swelled to in excess of 170,000 people and Clarksville is the lone municipality and county seat of Montgomery County, now heading toward a quarter-million people.

He said he'll hit the ground running.

"We've got to keep the pedal to the metal on issues such as transportation, affordable housing and public safety in Clarksville," Pitts said.
