Jets expected to name starting quarterback by next Monday

The Jets' quarterback conundrum is expected to be solved by next Monday, according to coach Todd Bowles.

Josh McCown, Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty are all competing for the starting position, but McCown is expected to earn the top spot. Saturday's preseason game against the Giants is the last chance to make an impression.

"We'll discuss it after the (Giants game) and come up with our starter," Bowles said. "We'll do it Monday after watching the film."

Hackenberg had a chance to prove himself last weekend, but was abysmal in his preseason start against the Lions.

He went 2 for 6 for 14 yards in his five possessions, was sacked twice and fumbled once. When Petty took over, he posted better numbers by going 15 for 24 for 160 yards, no touchdowns and one interception.

McCown also has far more experience on his side after spending 15 seasons in the league.

However, Bowles recently said the scrutiny of Hackenberg was unfair and that he didn't have much of a chance to prove himself.

"I have my own thoughts," Bowles said. "But that's a coach's decision with all of us."

Expect McCown to start, but for Hackenberg and Petty to get their fair share of playing time.
