    Mexico's presidential front-runner walks a thin, tense line in following outgoing populist

    As she runs to replace outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Claudia Sheinbaum is struggling to construct her own image, leaving many wondering whether she can escape the shadow of the larger-than-life incumbent. The former Mexico City mayor and frontrunner in the June 2 presidential election has had to unquestioningly adopt the programs of the popular López Obrador as candidate of the Morena party he created and dominates. Sheinbaum could turn out to be more of a “leftist” than López Obrador has been if she beats out opposition candidate Xóchitl Gálvez and Jorge Álvarez Máynez of the small Citizen Movement party on June 2.

    Families of Uvalde school shooting victims plan Wednesday announcement ahead of 2-year anniversary

    The families of 19 of the victims in the Uvalde elementary school shooting in Texas have scheduled a news conference Wednesday ahead of the upcoming two-year anniversary of one of the deadliest school shootings in U.S. history. The attack at Robb Elementary School on May 24, 2022 killed 19 fourth-graders and two teachers when the teenage gunman burst into their classroom and began shooting. One of the attorneys representing the Uvalde families, Josh Koskoff of Connecticut, helped families of the victims in the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting win a $1.4 billion defamation judgement against conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, and reach a $73 million settlement with gunmaker Remington, the company that made the rifle used at Sandy Hook.

    Toro hits solo homer in 8th and A's end 8-game skid with 5-4 win over Rockies

    Abraham Toro hit a go-ahead homer in the eighth after Seth Brown hit a tying two-run drive the previous inning, and the Oakland Athletics snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 5-4 win over the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night. Colorado's Ezequiel Tovar hit a pair of solo home runs for his first career multi-homer game and Ryan McMahon added a two-run drive before the A's rallied against Justin Lawrence and Tyler Kinley (2-1). Lucas Erceg (2-2) pitched the eighth before flame-throwing closer Mason Miller struck out the side in order in the ninth for his ninth save in as many chances.
