Girl Scouts of the USA has announced that a new cookie flavor will be available for the upcoming cookie season, which begins in January.

Girl Scout Cookie season is nearly five months away, but the national organization has announced a new cookie flavor for 2023.

Raspberry Rally cookies, described as the “sister” cookie to the beloved Thin Mints, will soon join the nationwide Girls Scout cookie lineup, a Girl Scouts of the USA spokeswoman told the Daily Press last week.

The new raspberry cookie is an infused disc of raspberry flavor and dipped in the same chocolaty coating as the Thin Mint.

The new cookie will be the first in the Girl Scout cookie lineup to be exclusively offered for online direct shipment only, enhancing girls’ e-commerce sales and entrepreneurial skills, the nonprofit said.

Proceeds raised from in-person and online cookie orders directly benefit local councils and troops.

Girl Scout cookie season is recognized nationally from January through April, but local timing varies.

The Raspberry Rally will be available online only during Girl Scout Cookie season.

Cookie fan expectations

Girl Scout cookie fans in the High Desert shared their thoughts and expectations about the new offering, which was created by ABC Bakery in Richmond, Virginia.

The other commercial baker used by the Girl Scouts is Louisville, Kentucky-based Little Brownie Bakers, which offers a slightly different menu of cookies.

Colleen Calderon said the Raspberry Rally Cookie just may heal her broken heart after ABC Bakery introduced the S'Mores Girl Scout Cookie in 2017 and discontinued them last year.

“The new Raspberry Rally Cookies sound awesome,” said Calderon, a Hesperia resident. “I will definitely buy those cookies. I can't wait until they are available.”

Marilyn Vaughn, who grew up in the ‘60s and still has her original Scout uniform that she bought for $7.99 at JCPenney, said she’s excited to try the new raspberry-flavored offering.

“Those cookies sound amazing because raspberry is my favorite flavor,” Vaughn said. “After I try one, when they come out, I will let you know what I really think about them.”

Vaughn said she still has several Girl Scout award badges from when she sold cookies at 50 cents a box.

Every year, Oak Hills resident Kathy Franklyn purchases 24 boxes of Thin Mints for her family and stores them in her freezer to eat throughout the year.

“I’ll probably buy a couple of boxes and try them out,” Franklyn said. “If they’re good, I’ll buy more, which means I’ll have to make room in my freezer.”

The cookies

The new Raspberry Rally joins a 12-variety cookie lineup from ABC Bakery that features Thin Mints, Lemonades, Shortbread, Caramel deLites, Peanut Butter Patties, Peanut Butter Sandwich, Toast-Yay! and the gluten-free Caramel Chocolate Chip.

The top five most popular cookie flavors, according to the Girl Scouts are:

  1. Thin Mints: Crisp, chocolate cookies dipped in a delicious mint chocolaty coating.

  2. Caramel deLites/Samoas: Crisp cookies with caramel, coconut, and chocolaty stripes.

  3. Peanut Butter Patties/Tagalongs: Crispy cookies layered with peanut butter and covered with a chocolaty coating.

  4. Do-si-dos/Peanut Butter Sandwich: Crunchy oatmeal sandwich cookies with peanut butter filling.

  5. Lemonades/Lemon-Ups: Savory, refreshing shortbread cookies topped with a tangy lemon-flavored icing.

Girl Scout goals

Parents told the Daily Press that each Girl Scout troop inspires and supports the entrepreneurial aspirations of girls during cookie season and throughout the year.

Girls can learn five essential skills through the cookie program: goal setting, money management, people skills, decision-making and business ethics.

The Girl Scout cookie program is the largest girl-led business in the world, with the children selling about 200 million boxes of cookies — nearly $800 million worth — each cookie season.

The Girl Scouts of San Gorgonio, who oversees the High Desert region, said cookie season kicks off on January 29, 2023, with online marketing starting on January 15, 2023.

Consumers can visit girlscoutcookies.org to sign up to be notified as soon as cookies are available in our area. Information on joining or volunteering can be found at  gssgc.org/join..
