Coming to Cape stages March through May: Sondheim, Sinatra and 'Something Rotten'

As the new season gets ever-closer, Cape theaters are offering a smorgasbord ranging from a British thriller to a Sondheim classic to a romp in the park. What better way to welcome spring?

You don't have to wait until summer for local theater. So you can plan, here are shows to put a spring in your step:

“An Inspector Calls,” March 2-19 at the Barnstable Comedy Club. Set at an English dinner party on the eve of World War I and the Russian Revolution, the play is a classic British thriller with clear resonance for modern times.

“One Acts,” March 1, 8 and 15 at the Academy of Performing Arts in Orleans. This is part of the company’s Festival of Community Voices, with these little theater bites performed Wednesdays through March 15.

“Somewhere Beyond the Sea,” March 24-26 at the Academy of Performing Arts. This is a little treat for all lovers of the music of those famous Rat Pack crooners. It offers the intimate feel of a lounge in the days of Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr.

Audience appetite for a high-energy blast from the past to break out of the winter doldrums was so great that Cotuit added two shows and sold out every seat in the run.

“Company,” April 7-23 at the Academy of Performing Arts. (No show on Easter, April 9). This is the Sondheim classic about love, marriage and the joy of living.

“Barefoot in the Park,” April 13-30 at the Cotuit Center for the Arts. Who can forget the movie with Jane Fonda and Robert Redford? Was that really way back in 1967?

“Gypsy,” April 1-May 6 at the Cape Cod Theatre Company in West Harwich. Ethel Merman and Angela Lansbury starred in two of the countless versions of this Broadway perennial hit.

“Something Rotten,” April 28-May 14 at the Falmouth Theatre Guild. Ever wonder who wrote the world’s first musical? This show is an answer to that question, wrapped in music and fun.
