Capital Medical Society recognizes two physicians with awards in honor of Doctor's Day

The Capital Medical Society (CMS), along with title sponsor, Capital Health Plan, will celebrate Doctors’ Day at the 20th annual Celebration Awards Dinner on Thursday, March 31, at 6:30 p.m. at the Dunlap Champions Club at FSU.

Dr. Robert D. Snyder will be honored with the I.B. Harrison, M.D. Humanitarian Award, and Dr. Carlos Campo will be honored with the Thomas L. Hicks, M.D. Outstanding Physician Award.

This year, Dr. Robert D. Snyder, a retired, board-certified, general surgeon will be honored with the I.B. Harrison, M.D. Humanitarian Award. This award is bestowed on a physician who has been nominated and selected by their peers as one who exemplifies the values that Dr. I.B. Harrison personified: compassion, service, respect, wisdom, and integrity.

The award is named for the late Dr. I.B. Harrison, who was an esteemed pioneer in the Tallahassee medical community, an internist with the original Southern Medical Group and who eventually served as the long-time Medical Director at TMH.

The award was introduced by Capital Health Plan in 1997 and was jointly presented with CMS. Previous recipients are: Dr. I.B. Harrison, Dr. Hank Watt, Dr. A.D. Brickler, Dr. William Smith, Dr. Pat Woodward, Dr. Brian Sheedy, Dr. Orson Smith, Dr. David Craig, Dr. James Stockwell, Dr. Lisa Jernigan, Dr. Charles Mathews, Drs. Louis & Judy St. Petery, Dr. Sam Moorer, Dr. Whit Oliver, Dr. Don Zorn, Dr. James Geissinger, Dr. David Miles, Dr. Nelson Kraeft, Dr. Al McCully, Dr. H. Avon Doll, Jr., Dr. Richard Zorn, Dr. Duncan Postma, Dr. Andrew Wong, and Dr. Sergio Ginaldi.

This year, Dr. Carlos Campo, a Tallahassee physician with board certifications in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine, critical care medicine, and neurocritical care medicine will be honored by his peers with the Thomas L. Hicks, M.D. Outstanding Physician Award.

This award honors a physician who has demonstrated leadership within the field of medicine through involvement in organized medicine and political activities, clinical excellence and contributions to education, particularly with medical students. The award is named for the late Dr. Thomas L. Hicks, who was the first recipient of the award, a respected leader in organized medicine, and a founding business partner of the original Patients First where he served as both a practicing physician and their Medical Administrator. Previous recipients are: Dr. Thomas Hicks, Dr. Terry McCoy, Dr. Larry Deeb, Dr. Ray Bellamy, Dr. Gary Winchester, Dr. Charles Moore, Dr. Charles Williams, Dr. Dean Watson, Dr. Alma Littles, Dr. Armand Cognetta, Dr. Michael Forsthoefel, Dr. Wayne Batchelor, Dr. John Mahoney, Dr. John Katopodis, and Dr. David Saint.

National Doctors’ Day is March 30th, which marks the date ether was first used as an anesthesia in 1842. Doctors’ Day recognizes all physicians for their contributions to health and healthcare worldwide.

The Capital Medical Society (CMS) is the local physician membership organization, representing the interests of physicians and their patients in Leon, Gadsden, Jefferson, and Wakulla Counties.
