"1923" Was Actually Filmed Across Multiple Countries
1923 is officially back with new weekly episodes after its midseason hiatus! Unsurprisingly, the first season of the Yellowstone prequel, which is exclusively streaming on Paramount+, is packed with sweeping landscape scenery. But unlike Yellowstone—which was mainly filmed in Utah, Montana, and Texas—1923 centers on Montana and takes viewers to multiple countries in Africa and beyond.
In case you need a refresher, 1923 explores “the early twentieth century when pandemics, historic drought, the end of Prohibition, and the Great Depression all plague the mountain west and the Duttons who call it home,” per Paramount+. With the success of Yellowstone and its other prequel show 1883, 1923 has garnered plenty of buzz and record ratings. The show is brimming with talent, thanks to Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren who star as the Duttons. As you tune into new episodes, learn more about the filming locations that made the fascinating drama possible.
Where was 1923 filmed?
Montana offers the western backdrop for the series. The fictional Dutton ranch, which was also featured in Yellowstone, is actually the historic Chief Joseph Ranch in Darby, Montana. Buildings in Butte, Montana, were used for the town’s exteriors and interiors, including Butte Civic Center and Butte’s Carpenter's Union Hall, NBC Montana reports. Other Montana towns tapped for the production include Whitehall, Park City, Valier, Anaconda, Deer Lodge, Hamilton, and Dillon, according to IMDb.
The rest of the show takes viewers outside of the United States—and it's all real. "I don't build a world with visual effects," creator Taylor Sheridan tells Entertainment Weekly about the Yellowstone universe. "I go shoot these corners of the world that people haven't seen."
In an interview with Deadline, Sheridan and the CEO of 101 Studios, one of the show's production companies, David Glasser share that the production was filmed in South Africa, Kenya, and Zanzibar in Tanzania, as well as the island state of Malta and Kabul in Afghanistan. Filming in these locations was no easy feat. "You know how hard it is to move a crew around in Africa in 2022 with Covid, and all the rules and all the politics?" Sheridan says.
1923 has already been renewed for a second season, so it's only a matter of time before we find out if the series will explore more incredible filming locations in the next installment.
