Mexico councilwoman killed after bloodiest-ever elections
A local Mexican councilwoman in a small town in the Pacific coastal state of Guerrero was killed on Friday by armed men who showed up at her front door, authorities and local media said, following the most violent elections in modern Mexican history. Esmeralda Garzon, who led the equity and gender commission on the municipal council of Tixtla, was killed in the early afternoon as she was leaving her house, local media reported. Garzon had been elected under the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), the once-dominant party which joined forces with other opposition groups to form a coalition against the now-ruling MORENA party.

Judge orders temporary halt to UC academic workers' strike over war in Gaza
Thousands of academic workers on strike at the University of California were ordered by a state judge Friday to temporarily cease their weekslong strike over the war in Gaza. Orange County Superior Court Judge Randall J. Sherman issued the emergency restraining order after UC lawyers argued that the ongoing strike would cause irreversible harm as students are nearing finals. The university system sued United Auto Workers Local 4811 on Tuesday even though both sides have competing unfair practice labor claims pending before the California Public Employment Relations Board, which declined twice to issue an emergency injunction.
