Athlete Profile

  • A big 2008-09 season saw Chan capture gold in four events and finish second in the world championships behind Evan Lysacek of the United States.
  • Victory at 2009 Four Continents came at the venue that will be used for the Vancouver Games.
  • Withdrew from Rostelecom Cup after tearing his calf muscle. Struggled in his return at Skate Canada, falling three times in the free skate to finish sixth, but rebounded to win his third straight Canadian title.
  • Had a surprising split with coach Don Laws on the eve of the Canadian championships and a month before the Olympics. Is now being coached by choreographer Lori Nichol and jump technician Christy Krall.
  • At 17, became the youngest Canadian men's champion when he upset soon-to-be world champion Jeffrey Buttle in January 2008.
  • Refreshingly candid.
  • Trained with Don Laws, Scott Hamilton's coach, after longtime coach Osborne Colson died in July 2006.
  • Both of Chan's parents are from Hong Kong, with his father moving to Canada at age 4 and his mother at age 21.
