Serena Williams Biography
A 14-time Grand Slam champion, reigning Wimbledon champion and one of the most polarizing female athletes in history, Williams will make her third Olympic appearance. She took part in the 2000 Sydney Games and 2008 Beijing Games, missing out on the 2004 Athens Games with a knee injury. Her lone Olympic appearance in singles came four years ago when she lost to Russia’s Elena Dementieva in the quarterfinals. She won gold medals in doubles in 2000 and 2008 with Venus Williams, and the sisters have also captured 12 Grand Slam doubles titles. Serena Williams has now won Wimbledon five times in singles with her 2012 triumph, four times in doubles, and also owns two Grand Slam mixed doubles titles. Controversy has surrounded her last two U.S. Open appearances in which she abused a line judge in 2009 and the chair umpire in 2011. Many American men are seeking to play with her in the inaugural mixed doubles event, and the possibility of her winning three medals is high. Said Williams: “I think it is more huge for the media for me to win singles. For me, any medal is great. If I win singles, it would be awesome. If I win doubles, it would be awesome. Or if I win mixed.''
