Caroline Wozniacki Biography
A former world No. 1, Wozniacki holds the dubious distinction of being perhaps the best female player never to win a Grand Slam title. The closest she came was her loss to Kim Clijsters in the 2009 U.S. Open final, and she finished at No. 4 that season as she won three WTA titles. In 2010, Wozniacki won 62 matches and a WTA-best six titles to finish at No. 1. But Grand Slam failure haunted her once more as her semifinal loss to Vera Zvonareva in the semifinals of the U.S. Open was her best showing in tennis’ showcase events. Wozniacki then spent all of one week of 2011 at No. 1 as she won 63 matches and made the semifinals of the Australian Open and the U.S. Open. Wozniacki has never advanced past the fourth round at Wimbledon heading into this year’s event, so she comes into the Games with something to prove. Her first Olympic appearance in Beijing four years ago ended with a second-round loss to Daniela Hantuchova. She has indicated that she could play in the inaugural mixed doubles event if she can gain a wild-card spot along with Frederick Nielsen. Wozniacki could also be a fan favorite at the All-England club since she is in a high-profile relationship with former world No. 1 golfer Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland.
