Coach: Gender tests not explained to Semenya

  • Print

JOHANNESBURG (AP)—A South African track coach has resigned, saying Monday that he and other officials failed a world champion runner by not telling her she was being subjected to tests to determine her sex.

Wilfred Daniels’ comments contradicted statements from Athletics South Africa officials who have accused the IAAF, track and field’s international governing body, of publicly humiliating world 800-meter champion Caster Semenya while denying any responsibility on their part. The South African officials have said tests were done only abroad, not in South Africa.

Athletics South Africa President Leonard Chuene told The Associated Press on Monday that Daniels’ statements were “wild allegations.” Both he and Daniels said Monday they were still awaiting an IAAF ruling on Semenya’s sex—and future as a runner.

The Athletics South Africa Web site listed Daniels as a manager for middle distance—Semenya’s specialty—for the team that went to the IAAF World Championships in Berlin in August.

He told the AP he resigned last week from his post, which included supervising Semenya’s personal coach and overseeing South Africa’s performance at international meets. He said he agonized over the decision for weeks before deciding “there’s only one way for me to deal with this, and that was to say sorry and walk away.”

“Maybe it’s time that other people came in and do what I was supposed to do,” he said.

Daniels said he found out shortly before Semenya won the race at the world championships in Germany last month that she had been tested in South Africa in July at the IAAF’s behest. He said she was told she was undergoing only a doping test.

IAAF rules say such cases are to be handled confidentially. Instead, responding to media reports, the IAAF publicly acknowledged hours before the 800-meter final that questions had been raised about Semenya and that sex tests were initiated in response.

The IAAF has said Semenya is not accused of cheating by trying to mask her sex. She may have a biological condition that gives her an advantage over other female runners. That could result in her being banned from the sport.

Daniels said he did not know why Semenya was lied to, but said it could have been to protect her feelings at a time when the issue was confidential, as IAAF rules demand.

But “when there’s legal implications that an athlete could be barred from competing for life, we need to explain to the individual concerned, look, these are the implications,” Daniels said.

He said Semenya would have been better prepared to deal with the media storm had she been told “this is what’s going to happen, this is how gender verification tests are done, these are your rights,” he said. “Those are the kind of issues that we didn’t explain to her.”

Daniels said he explained and apologized to Semenya over the weekend, and she took the news calmly. He said the poise she has shown since the case became public is “a lesson to us grown-ups on how to behave under difficult circumstances.”

Daniels said IAAF rules stipulate the results be kept private, but that he was not sure that would happen.

“The IAAF violated their own procedures and protocols by putting this out in the public domain,” he said.

IAAF President Lamine Diack has publicly acknowledged the affair was handled badly, telling reporters in Berlin last month: “I deeply regret that confidentiality was breached in this case and that the IAAF were forced into a position of having to confirm that gender testing was being carried out on this young athlete.”

Chuene called on Daniels to prove his statements. Until then, Chuene said, “wild allegations will remain wild allegations.”

Chuene said top South African track officials were meeting this weekend to determine their next step in Semenya’s case. He would not say what options they were considering.

If she has a virgina then she is a female. we should all forget about all the testeron or whatever it is called. should we then say that usain Bolt is not human beacuse his performance is out of this world? Should we then say Bolt should be tested whether he is a Chettar - the fastest running animal in the world? in as much as she is not bisexual. in as much as she has a womb, whe should be regarded as a female.

Everybody gets so worked up about stuff. Good grief! Get involved in your own passions in life and let the track people work it out. They are the only ones who are affected by this.

UHH!! Science does define your gender when it comes to sports. You are either a male or a female and that is why she is being tested. Who knows it may surface that it was her GOD given CHOICE to take performance enhancers that has altered her body to look and act more as a male. And maybe nothing will come from the testing... However, their is more that substantial evidence that she is either on high levels of GH or she is a bi -gender individual. If her testosterone levels are greatly higher than that of her peers than her body is acting as a male=competitive advantage. I sure hope none of this is the case because she is an amazing athlete. BUT WE WIILL SOON SEE.

I feel compelled to address the issue of "gender testing". Gender is not Sex. Your sex is the biological makeup that scientifically defines you as either "male" or "female" and is usually determined by your reproductive organs and/or levels of estrogen and testosterone. Gender is the performance of acts that have been prescribed as either feminine or masculine (i.e.: putting on make-up, wearing dresses, manners of speaking, how your hair is cut, how you carry yourself, how you walk, how you address other sexes...). The tests they are doing are not testing her gender, the media and speculation of her SEX is what is testing her GENDER. This may not seem very important - the difference in how the language is used. However, the common misconception that sex and gender are interchangeable terms actually speaks to the larger question of why she is being tested in first place. She does not "act like a women" - aka: she does not perform her gender - and therefore her sex MUST be questioned. How foolish and narrow minded. We are so limited in thought and so short in our sight. Competition can push us to know our greatest strengths, but it also exposes our deepest weaknesses, as individuals and as a human society. This story deeply saddens me.

She is a female because she was born a female. A lot of women have dominate features and that is something they can not help. Women walk around looking like their fathers. Men walk around looking like...well they can still be identified as men but thats not the point. What she just went through unknowingly was totally embarrasing and I really feel for her.

People need to educate themselves a bit more before commenting. This is a private matter, or should have been, and it is possible that this young woman was born intersex. That doesn't give you the right to claim she's not a woman, make highly personal comments about the size of her privates, or anything else. Please give this young woman the privacy you would hope for if you found out you might have a medical condition; she has the right to decide how to deal with this, and would probably appreciate some compassion rather than snide remarks.

The clit enlarges with the use of steriods. So if she has a large " biological condition " then maybe she should be tested for other " substances". If not, then whip em down honey and prove these suckas wrong

Did anyone think the "biological condition" could be a penis? Wake up people---
coach quitting----something is NOT right. The testing results need to be reviewed.
If "she" is a "he" it's not fair for the "real" females. If not, no problem.

Kind of like Obama's BIRTH CERTIFICATE. Show the BC and there's no prob; keep
hiding behind your lawyers and it's mass CHAOS---the truth will come out!

Go girl!!!!!!!! start breaking them records at every meet they invite you. Do the running as they do the talk and just tell em to fill up your account. Our Kenyan girls are good and should keep working hard after all they just beat the Ethipians at their distance the other day.

This is insane!! We are all born with "Biological Conditions", each different than the other. Why one's disorder is a reason to question someones superiority, as well as outstanding results, and to be judged by it!? I say face the fact that someone is better than you! All athletes train to perfection, in most cases from a very young age, especially Olympic contendors. Some excell while others fall behind. Guess what happens to them, they get dropped out! We bring only our top olympians to the game, with those special " Biological Conditions", as it has been called. We don't drop out our best athletes because they are great at what they do, because they have a biological condition that makes them better than some other athletes. We train harder to beat the competition!!! I say get over it !!!! Accept the fact that there is someone better than the rest of them! Is that not what these athletes train for. To be the best at what they do! To be acknowledged by there families, friends and countries. Now they are ridiculed because they are better!! I believe it made her a better person to stick around with all that unneccasary criticism. We are all unique individuals, not one the same, some are blessed, some are not. Why be someone you are not, we are all individuals, be your own. Not for the world, but for yourselves!
