Gijs van Hoecke Biography

The Belgian teamed with Kenny De Ketele to win gold in the madison at the 2012 track world cycling championships. This was a bit of redemption for van Hoecke, who crashed during the omnium elimination race at the 2011 worlds. While the madison victory was special for van Hoecke, it does nothing to help his cause for the London Games since the event is no longer part of the Olympic program. His focus will be on the omnium, in which he earned the overall bronze medal at the 2011 worlds despite the crash. He finished ninth overall in the omnium at the 2012 world championships, with his best performance of the six-race event coming in the elimination race where he placed fourth. The omnium will make its Olympic debut in 2012.
