Thrashers sign Antropov from Rangers

The Atlanta Thrashers signed free agent forward Nik Antropov to a four-year, $16 million contract on Thursday, setting up a reunion with Ilya Kovalchuk. The 29-year-old Antropov played with Kovalchuk in Russia during the NHL lockout. General manager Don Waddell said Kovalchuk endorsed the signing with a text message saying "great job." It's your move, Ilya Kovalchuk.

Thrashers general manager Don Waddell has lived up to his promise of going after quality free agents in an attempt to improve his team's roster, just as Kovalchuk demanded. Now it's time for Kovalchuk, the team's captain, to sign a new long-term contract and commit to Waddell and the Thrashers.

Atlanta wasn't able to snag Marian Gaborik—the Rangers did—or Brian Gionta—Montreal did—but the additions of All-Star defenseman Pavel Kubina and hulking center Nik Antropov should go a long way to helping the Thrashers be taken seriously once again.

Ever since losing Niclas Havelid, the Thrashers have been looking for a top-notch replacement on the blue line. ...More
