G Jimmy Howard will finally get his chance to show the organization what he can do, as Chris Osgood's backup next season. Howard, 25, has not developed as quickly as the Wings had hoped after they selected him with their first pick (64th overall in the second round) in the 2003 entry draft. He has had an up-and-down four-year career with Grand Rapids Griffins (AHL) and is out of minor-league options. He has gone 1-5 with a 2.76 goals-against average in nine appearances with the Wings over three seasons.
