The Pittsburgh Penguins fired assistant coach Todd Reirden on Friday, just over two weeks after the organization missed out on the playoffs for a second straight season. Reirden was in charge of Pittsburgh's power play. The Penguins struggled while on the man advantage all season despite having a star-studded unit that included Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang and Erik Karlsson.
Simon Holmstrom roofed a shot for the go-ahead goal at 14:27 of the third as the New York Islanders topped the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins 5-4 on Wednesday night. Holmstrom, Brock Nelson and Samuel Bolduc each had a goal and an assist, and Casey Cizikas and Kyle Palmieri also scored for the Islanders, who finished the regular season 39-27-16.
