Jeff Garcia(notes) didn't sign with the Oakland Raiders to be the No.2 quarterback behind JaMarcus Russell(notes). Garcia has every intention of winning the starting job, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times and Chicago Tribune.
"Not knocking JaMarcus or anybody else on the team, but I have a belief in my own abilities," Garcia said in a phone interview from his home in San Diego.. "[That has] me feeling I am the best quarterback on the team. That's just how I approach the game."
Over the past 10 years, Garcia has a 58-58 record as a starter with five different teams. After five seasons with the 49ers, he spent one forgettable season each with the Browns and Lions, filled in brilliantly for an injured Donovan McNabb(notes) with the Eagles and spent the last two years with the Buccaneers. The Times called Garcia a quarterback who can make a good team look better.
"Even though the last five years I've played for four different teams, I try not to look at myself as one of those guys who's just looking for an opportunity to be a part of a team," he said. "I feel like I'm still a guy who can be a difference-maker. Now, how the management or people above us look at me? I've had to fight that battle throughout my career: I'm not big enough, I'm not strong enough, I don't fit the stereotype that they're looking for, whatever it may be.
"But when I come into a situation, I feel like I inspire people."
