The San Diego Chargers have long been rumored to be one of the teams that could be moving to Los Angeles to help cultivate football fever in the City of Angels again.
That rumor briefly took on more legitimacy Tuesday when Toronto's Fan 590 reported that Philip Anschutz has or will purchase 35 percent of the team. The station noted that the sale is part of a process that will culminate in the Chargers moving to L.A., where Anschutz and his company, AEG, are trying to get a stadium built.
But the San Diego Union-Tribune reports no sale is underway and that Philip Rivers(notes) and the boys will be staying put.
Chargers team counsel Mark Fabiani emailed reporters Tuesday night with the following statement, the Union-Tribune reports: "There is no truth to the rumor out of Toronto that the Chargers have agreed to sell a portion of the team to Mr. Anschutz."
