David Garrard: News and Notes

May 16 Garrard plans to retire as a result of lingering knee woes, the Daily News reports.

Recommendation: With Garrard no longer in the mix, the Jets' QB competition is essentially a two-man battle between Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith. Look for Greg McElroy and Matt Simms to compete for the No. 3 QB slot, with Garrard's retirement presumably paving the way for the much-maligned Sanchez (who had been a candidate to be released or dealt) to remain on the team's roster.

May 15 A person familiar with the decision says David Garrard plans to retire because of lingering knee issues, leaving the New York Jets one less quarterback in their open competition. The 35-year-old Garrard was signed in March to provide veteran competition for Mark Sanchez. But Garrard, who hadn't played in a regular-season game in the NFL since 2010 because of injuries, plans to step away because of knee troubles.

Advice: The former Jacksonville Jaguars star was cut by the Miami Dolphins last summer after he needed arthroscopic surgery on his ailing left knee. Garrard was expected to be in the mix for the Jets' starting job, along with Sanchez and second-round pick Geno Smith.
