While pretty much everyone watching the Oscars was in shock after last month's Best Picture mix-up, at least one actor in attendance instead found the whole thing pretty funny - and now, he's finally revealed why.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight this week, Ryan Gosling explained why he started laughing when it was revealed that Moonlight had beaten La La Land for Best Picture, and it has nothing to do with the absurdity of the mix-up.

"What really was happening as I was watching, it was surreal anyway, I was watching people start to have this panicked reaction in the crowd and guys were coming on with headsets and I felt like someone had been hurt," he said, recalling his view from the stage. "I thought there was some kind of medical situation, and I had this worst case scenario playing out in my head."

Finally, someone explained what was actually happening, and RyGos was so flooded with relief that he couldn't help but start laughing.

"And then I just heard, 'Oh Moonlight won,' and I was so relieved that I started laughing," he said. "But truthfully, I was also so thrilled that Moonlight won, I know the director…I’ve worked with them before. It’s such a groundbreaking film, made for a million dollars, and an incredible achievement, and I’m so happy for them that they were being recognized."

His sentiments echoed those of his La La Land co-star Emma Stone, who previously said she was absolutely thrilled that Moonlight won Best Picture.

"I fucking loved Moonlight," Stone told Entertainment Weekly. "God, I love Moonlight so much! I'm so excited for Moonlight! And of course, it was an amazing thing to hear La La Land. I think we all would have loved to win Best Picture. But we are so excited for Moonlight. I think it's one of the best films of all time. So I was pretty beside myself."
