The ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Queens Serve VMAs Realness on MTV’s White Carpet

Who wore it best? The queens of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars 2 were werking the white carpet at the MTV Video Music Awards this Sunday at New York’s Madison Square Garden — serving VMAs realness in a collection of classic MTV couture that had everyone gagging on their eleganza.

Season 5’s Coco Montrese was a vision in violet, paying homage to Lil’ Kim’s bosom-baring 1999 outfit so perfectly, she surely earned the approval of even the infamously handsy Diana Ross.

Coco’s onetime nemesis, Alyssa Edwards, rocked Katy Perry’s ironic denim-on-denim ensemble from 2014 — which, just to get all meta on you, was also a tribute to Britney Spears’s bedazzled getup from the 2001 American Music Awards.

Season 5’s Roxxxy Andrews showed off her newly slimmed-down body-ody-ody in a Kim Kardashian-inspired minidress that probably had Kanye West himself doing a double-take.

Season 4’s Phi Phi O’Hara was serving beef, instead of her usual fish, in a circa-2010 meat dress that looked like it had been cleaved right off of Lady Gaga’s torso.

Season 7’s Ginger Minj went old-school, all the way back to the very first VMAs in 1984, in a Madonna-esque bridal gown that wasn’t exactly like a virgin, but made Ginger look like quite a boy toy.

Season 2’s Tatianna honored Aaliyah, who died almost exactly 15 years ago, by wearing a replica of her zebra-print VMAs gown from 2000.

But the Best VMAs Homage Moonman, should such an award actually exist, would’ve gone to Season 5’s Alaska 5000 — who recreated Britney’s “I’m a Slave 4 U” jungle-goddess look, complete with a replica of Britney’s beloved old albino snake, Banana.

Missing in action was Season 6’s Adore Delano, who, given her well-known fondness for grunge, punk rock, and Riot Grrrls, probably could have totally rocked Courtney Love’s white column dress from the 1993 VMAs. Adore was dearly missed; she would have been the girl with the most cake.

This was the second year in a row that the queens of RuPaul’s Drag Race made a major splash at the MTV Video Music Awards. Last year, a cast of Drag Race dozens joined host Miley Cyrus and the Flaming Lips for a jaw-dropping, show-closing performance.
